Course Description
- India has about 440 million children 0-18 years of age. They constitute about 40 percent of the population. These children are a demographic dividend and a big asset for the country. Children due to their tender age and developing mind are dependent on adults for their nurturing and therefore, need special care and protection. Socially and physically children are the weakest member of society.
- Children grow and develop well when they have secure and positive relationships with caregivers who have knowledge and skills about how to raise children.
- However, many children in India do not reach their full potential because of many reasons like poverty, disability, discrimination due to gender, race, caste, and geographical location, and unfavorable environments like conflict, abuse, and violence. They do not receive adequate nutrition, health, and care, and lack opportunities in life. These children and their families can be helped.
- Children need to be protected from all forms of violence, abuse, and exploitation. They also need to be protected from disease, poor nutrition, and poor health. This means preventing what might happen to damage and hurt a child which will impact his/her physical, cognitive, and social-emotional development.
- Children have certain rights like the right to life, right to health, right to education, and right against exploitation. Failure to ensure children’s right to protection adversely affects all rights.
- Many children often have their rights violated. Care and Educational professionals working with children play an important role in ensuring that the rights of children in their care are fulfilled. They have certain obligations to ensure that children's rights are not violated.
- This training course is divided into 5 modules- Introduction, Understanding Child Development, Understanding Child Abuse, and Child Protection, Learning about Child Rights and Child Legislation, and Redressal Mechanism.
- This training course is intended for professionals working with children, for example, school teachers, child care institutions e.g. orphanages, foster care, government staff, and non - government organizations looking after children.
- The course is planned not only to give knowledge but also to inspire and motivate participants to provide a conducive environment for children where they grow and develop to their full potential.

Jobs & Career Opportunities:
Juvenile Defense Lawyers: Many attorneys who feel strongly about the treatment of young criminal offenders work in the juvenile justice department as juvenile defence lawyers. The issues surrounding punishment and rehabilitation of delinquent youth are very volatile. Lawyers who choose to pursue juvenile defence must prepare to be emotionally as well as intellectually invested in their client's case. Juvenile defence lawyers must incorporate child psychology and development, social work and knowledge of programs in community health and alternative education in order to appeal for the best possible outcome for their client.
Juvenile Correctional Officers: The juvenile correctional officer works directly with inmates of a juvenile correctional facility, drug treatment centres or juveniles involved in a rehabilitation program. Using qualities of both a correctional officer and a social worker, they maintain the security and safety of youths in the justice system, enforce facility rules and monitor and report prisoner behaviour to correctional counsellors.
Juvenile Correctional Counselors: Juvenile correctional counsellors, also referred to as correctional treatment specialists, work with juveniles who have been convicted of a crime to determine the best course of action to take in order to rehabilitate them. They work in coordination with correctional officers, probation or parole officers and judges to develop a series of activities and meetings for convicted juveniles. Correctional counsellors help the child address and change behaviours that might lead to more criminal behaviour.
A CASA (Court Assigned Special Advocate) is responsible for children placed in the child welfare system. CASA will be the child's voice by representing his/her best interests. CASA will ensure the child's needs are met, both medical and social as well as any special needs. CASA will facilitate court-ordered family visitations, attend court hearings to inform the judge of progress and make recommendations and assess potential foster or adoptive parents for the child.
Child Welfare Social Worker: Some of the child welfare social worker’s core responsibilities include responding to cases of child abuse and neglect; removing children from home settings that are dangerous or do not meet certain standards; working with children and their families on a reunification plan in collaboration with child dependency courts; helping parents meet the needs of their children by connecting them with resources and helping them navigate programs, therapy and advising; and arranging for short- and long-term care of children whose families cannot take care of them.
